Moovly.com, once home to a video startup, was back at auction after an unpaid bid

Moovly was a Belgian online video editor, listed in Canada. This week its .com was back at auction, and September's $12,166 needs a footnote.

Moovly.com, once home to a Belgian startup whose online editor let businesses make marketing and training videos, was back at DropCatch this week. On October 8, 120 bids took it to $15,500, the last price we observed. The name already had a five-figure auction result attached to it, though that result came with an awkward footnote.

The editor launched in 2013, and the company reached Canada's TSX Venture Exchange in 2016. In August 2024, the company announced a deal to bring AI-assisted video creation to Acquia's customers. Six months later, it reported a trading halt after missing its annual financial filings. This year, its domain turned up at auction.

Years as a working brand give the short, pronounceable .com a history beyond its spelling. Domain Name Wire's September 23 report put its Ahrefs Domain Rating at 71, a measure of the strength of its backlink profile. Those links offer a plausible source of interest alongside the name itself. The same report followed other expired domains being repurposed for gambling sites, illustrating the competition for what old websites leave behind.

That report also carried the footnote. It listed Moovly.com among July's NameJet sales, at $5,805. Citing NameBio, it then gave a $12,166 reported closing bid at DropCatch on September 7. Its editor added that DropCatch called this a user auction, and that the buyer hadn't paid despite several requests.

So this week's $15,500 is nearly three times the name's reported NameJet sale. The $12,166 in between still had no payment behind it when Domain Name Wire reported it. What Moovly does show is how much a former startup's name can still draw, likely helped by the links its website left behind, and how an auction figure can enter the sales record before anyone has paid. Payment and transfer after this week's auction aren't confirmed yet either.

Only three names we tracked from October 6 to 13 (UTC) went higher than Moovly. The table below shows the top eight by the last bid we observed, and the full results show the rest.

A correction to last week's email: the "Final bid" column showed the last bids we saw, and bidding can carry on after we look. For gsa.org we showed $15,680, and NameBio later reported $17,680.

Thanks for reading.
